Dennis & Shirley Whatman have been married for 31 years , both are atthe young ages between 40 and 50. Dennis infact has a handicap (NO NOT THE WIFE) but has lost 1 hand, 1 eye and part of his other hand. But that hasn’t stopped Dennis from racing. Dennis’s buggy is known as “Grandpa’s Wheelchair”.

His car is Fluro Yellow with Fluro Pink Wheels. Dennis doesn’t like colours but sure as (as Shirly would put it)hell catches the eye of the spectators.

1997 Finke Desert Race D.N.F
1999 Finke Desert Race 22nd outright.

1st in Class 1 Club Events. Looked real good for taking out 1st in Classe’s 1 & 2 (Husband & Wife) but had to settle for Dennis 1st Class 1
Shirley 2nd Class 2.
Shirley Whatman first started racing as a navigator for her husband Dennis inn 1993. At first Shirley was only allowed in the drivers seat for special occassion races, eg: Mothers Day or Ladies Races. Shirley started winning races & became competative with Dennis’s prologue times, hence the need for Dennis to upgrade to a Class 1 Buggy. As Shirley would put it Hip Hip Hooray, Shirley now has her own buggy.

274. Jump Up Frame with Toyota 4 a.g.e motor , Kombi Gear but with Albin Race Gears & Super Diff , Porche C.V’s with chrome Moly cages , disc brakes all round and EM1 Injec Computer.

1997 Nominated for Rookie of the years with C.A.M.S
Member of Alice Springs Off Road Race Club
1st in Class 2 Club Events.
2nd Outright for the year, in & amongst the boys.
1st attempt as all girls team in the Finke Desert Race, 1st Ladies team home over the line in 23rd position outright 82 starters.
